Reverse osmosis installations are used as a purification method and are also called hyperfiltration-, OO- or RO installations. In the reverse osmosis unit, a membrane is used as a filter, which filters dissolved substances out of the water. This membrane is designed in such a way that pure water is allowed to pass through, but larger particles (with a chemical composition) are prevented from passing through. After treatment with the reverse osmosis unit, the water is stripped of waste products, desalinated (stripped of salts) and all lime is removed.
